If you ask longtime industry veterans, they often explain that a so-called Crunch phase actually never has a positive effect during the development of a game and the many overtime over a long period of time damages the quality of the game more than helps (for example, check out the highly recommended Podcast on Crunch from The Pod purely).
Nevertheless, even large, experienced teams all too often cannot do without crunch phases. When Naughty Dog (Crunch for The Last of Us 2) or Rockstar Games (Crunch in Red Dead Redemption 2) finalize a new game project, you can virtually plan the next crunch message. Even with Blizzard, extremely strenuous crunch phases were simply part of it for a long time (Ben Brode on his 80-hour week).
And even with the Polish development studio CD Projekt RED, which has clearly positioned itself against crunch on the outside, it doesn't seem to go without it. Already last year Former employees spoke up about the difficult conditions in the development of Cyberpunk 2077 (buy now € 58.19 ) languages.
Now anonymous sources have again turned to journalist Jason Schreier and reported on a current crunch phase that should secure the targeted release date on November 19th. Apparently, an email from studio boss Adam Badowski was also forwarded, saying:
"As of today, the entire development studio is working at full throttle. Your typical working hours plus one day of the weekend. It is up to me to draw all the headwinds for this decision. I know it's exactly the opposite of what we said earlier about crunch. It's also the exact opposite of what I myself believed a while ago – that crunch should never be the answer. However, we have already explored all other options to cope with this situation."
Another postponement does not seem to be an issue. It wasn't until June that the Cyberpunk 2077 launch date from September 17th to November 19th postponed. After all: According to the sources, the overtime is supposed to be paid well, but they also report that the team has been working night shifts and weekends for over a year to complete the extensive role-play.
A statement or even confirmation from CD Projekt RED on the allegations is pending. You can find more on this topic in our special:
