In the run-up to WoW Shadowlands, there was a lot of talk about balancing pact capabilities. What usually gets lost in the discussions about the balance between the pacts and classes, however, are the different soul bonds and the associated media, which play at least as important a role in the choice of the pact.
After you have joined a pact, you get the opportunity to merge with a soul at the soul forge in your pact sanctum. This soul is a venerable follower of your pact and is also available to you as a fighter via the new mission table. Unlike the followers in Legion, you are not on the move with your soul mate in the free world and you have nothing else to do with him. There are three of these soul mates in total: One you get immediately, the other two you unlock via the pact campaign.
The purpose of a soul bond is to access one of three mini talent trees, as you can see in the picture below. Gradually, by collecting recognition (quasi an extra reputation for your pact) you unlock the talent rows and thus other useful skills. Aside from the new talent, the media associated with it is the most interesting thing about this feature.

No, media have nothing to do with television, the Internet or people with seemingly psychic powers. The "conduits", translated somewhat unhappily from English, are nothing more than gemstones that you use in fixed places in the soul bond talent tree and that can rise up to 14 ranks, which improves their effect. You get a medium through different activities in the game (world quests, dungeons, raids and so on).
WoW Shadowlands: Blizzard explains how the media works
Once collected, they appear in your media collection (see point 10 in the picture on the next page). With our warrior, a medium can, for example, extend the duration of a strong cooldown such as recklessness by 20 percent or give fatal impact a twelve percent chance of being triggered again. So media offer strong bonuses, but you are slightly restricted in choosing the right effects. For the upgrades of the new clunkers we have to go into the gullet and collect stygia. You can add random media to your collection or increase the rank of a medium at a dealer named Ven'ari, with whom you will have more pleasure in Shadowlands.
WoW Shadowlands: Media upgrades come via random system
Medium is not the same as medium As you can see in the picture above, the soul bond talent trees are not structured like your known talent matrix, but rather branched out. There are a total of three lanes that lead from top to bottom to the final talent, but you can only choose one lane along talents. So you are spoiled for choice as to which talent is the best for you. In addition, there are free spaces on this talent path in which you can use the media. But you cannot simply place these freely either. For example, if we want to use our medium to lengthen the duration of recklessness, a potency space must be free.
Media are divided into potency, finesse and resistance medium. Roughly speaking, potency stands for more damage, resistance for increased defense and a finesse effect can, for example, increase mobility. In the example of our warrior, however, we are only allowed to use our daring medium once, even if we could theoretically use two potency places. This makes choosing the right path in the soul bond tree a little trickier. In addition, you have to be sure about the use of a medium, because you can only change it a limited number of times. A change costs one medium energy, of which you build up one per day (up to a maximum of ten medium energies).
However, just like your normal class talents, you can change the talents at any time in a quiet area or via a tome of the calm mind. As mentioned, you only have one of the three soul union NPCs available to you at first, later you can switch back and forth between the talent trees of the NPCs in your pact sanctum for some anima at the soul forge.
This is how long you need for the activation of media and the soul bond talent tree
Your new talent tree is an important feature, but you don't have to worry too much about the choice or talent allocation at the beginning of the expansion. This also makes collecting the media more relaxed. Because the activation of the talent series is connected with the recognition of your pact or the collection of a new resource called "Glory". From recognition level 2, for example, you unlock the second row of talent, with level 4 the third row and the first medium, with level 5 the second medium and so on.
The maximum recognition level is initially 40 and the last row of talent in your soul bond tree will only be accessible at level 39. Fame cannot be grinded unrestrainedly compared to Artifact Power or Azerite, but has a weekly upper limit. If nothing changes by the release, it will take 16 weeks to reach Fame Level 40. The prerequisite for the maximum level at the end of March 2021, however, is that you always stay on the ball. A catch-up mechanism is activated for players who fall behind or follow a twink.
How important are the soul bonds really in the election of the pact?
All pacts use the same media (it would be even nicer if not) and the talent trees of the various soul union NPCs are set up halfway identically for the distribution of the finesse, potency and resistance media. However, it is difficult to compare the respective talents in the talent trees. We would like to say that they would only tip the scales in the pact election, but sorry, unfortunately they are not. A look at the soul bond talent trees is almost as important as choosing the pact skills themselves.
This is often related to the fact that these new talent trees improve the signature capabilities of the pacts. Venthyr, for example, have a teleport with an enormous range. This can receive a second charge via the soul bonds, free you from effects that restrict movement or disorient all affected opponents for six seconds at the target location. That's pretty strong in PvP, but the talent trees have very useful bonuses for PvE as well. For example, you can increase the bonuses of food buffs, bottles and potions by 15 percent.
