The Microsoft team wants publishers to offer all next-gen upgrades for Xbox Series X for free. However, should the partners decide against it, the company has prepared several options for how these upgrades can be brought to the players. The Xbox Series X will be available in stores later this year.

According to current information, Microsoft is said to have encouraged all publishers and developers currently working on a cross-gen title for Xbox One and Xbox Series X to offer the next-gen upgrade free of charge if the game has already been purchased. Publishers can choose Smart Delivery or their own upgrade program. EA recently introduced its system for PS5 and Xbox Series X with dual entitlement.

In the end, however, the publisher decides how to offer a next-gen upgrade for the new console. Microsoft also wants to offer its partners several options here. For example, titles can be made available as "cross-gene bundles" in retail stores or digitally. This package includes both Xbox One and Xbox Series X versions. Publisher 2K Games chose this option in the case of NBA 2K21. Players can only get both versions of the basketball simulation by purchasing the Mamba Forever Edition for $ 99.

Of course, publishers can also simply offer the implementations for Xbox One and Xbox Series X individually and at full price in stores or Microsoft stores. But here, too, publishers could opt for discounts if either version was already purchased. Next-gen upgrades in the form of DLCs are excluded, which are then to be sold via the Microsoft Store. Several teams have already promised free upgrades for their titles. Including CD Projekt Red for Cyberpunk 2077, Ubisoft for Assassin's Creed Valhalla or Bungie for Destiny 2.
